Trailer for Hayden Christensen-Starred Jumper Leaps Online

Sunday, March 1st, 2009

Unveiling the first look of its upcoming flick “Jumper”, the 20th Century Fox has submitted online the new trailer for the sci-fi thriller by now, inviting moviegoers to take their initial glimpse on the Doug Liman-directed piece, which Hayden Christensen is toplining.

Runs almost two and a half minutes, the trailer is placed on the movie’s official site but now can also be viewed via YouTube as seen below. It looks awesome, presenting many shots of the jumpers doing their jumps as well as confrontation between them and their hunters, the Paladins.

In addition, Fox has also launched an open contest called “Anywhere Is Possible” sweepstakes for a chance to win a roundtrip coach-class airfare for two. Participants can join the competition by visiting the link above to fill out information requested on the Entry Form while learning about the rules as well. Sweepstakes begins today, October 10, 2007, and ends on October 24, 2007 with winner being selected randomly and notified by email or phone on/about November 21, 2007.

Slated for a February 15, 2008 release, “Jumper” is based on Steven Gould’s novel of the same name telling about a young man who has an ability to teleport himself anywhere and becomes involved in a longstanding war between his kind and those who have sworn to kill them. Filming was carried at various places around the world like Rome, Toronto, Tokyo, and Ann Arbor, Michigan where sixty students from the nearby Huron High School were cast as the picture’s extras.

Jumper Trailer

Sunday, March 1st, 2009

Didn’t see this one coming! But who did, as this baby can teleport! Just when we thought the only big trailer coming our way this week was the one for The Golden Compass, the first preview of the upcoming sci-fi adventure, Jumper, has snuck its way online.

Jumper Trailer

It looks like Hayden has gotten his hands on the Force again, as he can teleport himself all over the place and, like his Jedi alter ego, he seems to abuse his gift. The first trailer for Jumper features a plethora of special effects that show Hayden Christensen disappearing and reappearing all over the globe.

Soon enough he gets noticed but, lucky for him, it is someone with a similar gift. Coincidence? Who knows, but in comes Samuel L. Jackson sporting futuristically white hair as he attempts to hunt Christensen down.

Craziness ensues.

Trailer for Steve Gould’s JUMPER

Sunday, March 1st, 2009

Steven C Gould’s Jumper is being made into a Hollywood movie with Hayden Christiansen and Samuel L Jackson, and the trailer has just gone live. I’m an enormous fan of the book — I must have read it a dozen times since its initial publication — and I’ve been waiting with crossed fingers for this movie as it inched its way from the news of the option to today. I’m really impressed with the trailer — it captures that feeling of giddy delight that made the book so fantastic.

The book is about Davey Rice, a kid who discovers that he can teleport. Gould takes this hoary sf chestnut and really makes it work, taking one of the most likable characters in young adult genre fiction and getting him to scientifically test the limits of his powers, while resolving some really wrenching emotional dilemmas and going on an action-adventure that keeps me on the edge of my seat every time.

The movie takes a lot of liberties with the plot, but it looks like there’s a lot to love in the story that Hollywood shot, judging by the trailer and what Steve’s said. There’s a new Jumper book out, Jumper: Griffin’s Story, which I plan on reading ASAP, since it tells the story of some of the characters in the film who aren’t in the book. Link (via Eat Our Brains)

Doug Liman’s Jumper Trailer Online

Sunday, March 1st, 2009

Okay, so I made fun of Doug Liman’s amazing ability to promote himself, but there’s no doubt about it — the guy knows how to do action movies, and after you’ve seen the trailer for his latest, the sci-fi/fantasy flick “Jumper”, I think you’ll agree. It actually looks a lot cooler than I thought it would, at least from reading the synopsis of the original novels by Steven Gould. Either Liman and co-writer David Goyer has completey reworked Gould’s original novel, or that book was a lot darker than I thought it was. Plus, you really, really don’t want to get on Samuel L. Jackson’s back side, especially when he has a metal rod thingie in his hand. Head down below to see the trailer.

A genetic anomaly allows a young man to teleport himself anywhere. He discovers this gift has existed for centuries and finds himself in a war that has been raging for thousands of years between “Jumpers” and those who have sworn to kill them.

Starring Hayden Christensen, Samuel L. Jackson, Jamie Bell, Diane Lane, Katie Boland, and directed by Doug Liman.

Jumper (for Joy)

Sunday, March 1st, 2009

I just saw the trailer for Jumper.

Let’s just say “It doesn’t suck.”

Oh my god, this is going to be HUGE!

(Yes, the trailer isn’t supposed to be released until midnight tonight (EDT) but the international trailer apparently went online last night.)

Yes they made changes but I’m delighted at how much from the books is showing up onscreen.

Jackson and Christensen in Jumper Trailer

Sunday, March 1st, 2009

Woohee! Get ready for some sci-fi action!

OK. So maybe it’s not much to jump up about but the trailer for Doug Liman’s Jumper has hit the web and rather unsurprisingly, it looks pretty run of the mill.

Based on the sci-fi best seller from Steven Gould, the story is about David Rice, a young guy with the ability to teleport. Everything is going fine and dandy until he discovers that his gift has been kicking around for a couple of thousand years, others share it and they’re all being hunted by a group that has vowed to kill them.

I like this premise, a lot, and the trailer doesn’t look god awful but it also doesn’t look great. It’s somewhere in between Next and I Robot.

I like Hayden Christensen and this is one of his few roles outside of the Star Wars saga and I’m not quite ready to give up on him yet, especially after his performance in Shattered Glass. As for Jackson well, he looks like he’s channeling some Elijah Price vibes. The rest of the film’s cast list is pretty decent including Diane Lane, Jamie Bell and Rachel Bilson.

Jumper opens on February 15th, 2008.

Jumper Trailer

Sunday, March 1st, 2009

A new Jumper Trailer has been released, and I’ve got to say it looks much better than I expected it would. Now, I’m a touch biased on this film cause I’ve got a couple of extra parts in the movie (which was a LOT of fun, and Haden is a great guy). Honestly thought the film does look like a lot of fun.

Here’s a snippet of the synopsis:

“Jumpers aren’t anything new. They’ve been around for ages. They are born with the gift to teleport anywhere in the world at any time. They first discover this ability around the age of 5. Jumping can cause damage to themselves and the environment around them if they’re not careful. Stress, emotion and things like that all play roles in their abilities. When they “jump” they temporarily leave behind what is called a “jumpscar”. It’s a rip in time and space that has the appearance like cigarette smoke hanging in the air… a jumpscar can kill anyone or anything that comes in contact with it while it lingers.

Paladins (Sam Jackson’s character is one of these) are an ancient order committed to hunting down and killing Jumpers. From what I can tell, they hold no ill will to jumpers, it’s just that they believe they are a threat to the earth, and are simply too powerful to be allowed to exist. They try to locate and kill them while they’re still young and not as good with their new powers yet.”

Quick quiz: When is President’s Day?

Yeah, I don’t know either. February or something, right? But the marketing team behind Doug Liman’s new film, Jumper, have decided to brand the movie as “Coming President’s Day Weekend!” Best of luck with that.

The trailer is… interesting. I’ve heard tales of a troubled shoot on this one, and it’s expensive as hell – Liman shot all over the world – so I’m deeply fascinated by how the marketing happens from here on out. The good news for Fox is that the trailer gets across the basic concepts quickly and cleanly (learn from this, New Line!) and that the scope is obviously big. I wasn’t that sold on the jumping effects, and the basic concepts don’t feel very fresh or new to me.

I’m hoping that this film is the last of Doug Liman’s big budget wank jobs – I think he was a very interesting director but Mr. & Mrs. Smith just didn’t work, which means it’s been since 2002 that he made a movie I liked. Granted, that was his second to last movie, but if you’re going to work this slowly, you can’t have two films in a row that seem as soulless as Smith and Jumper do.

MGM Moves ‘Awake’ to November 30 Release

Sunday, March 1st, 2009

After a long delay MGM has finally slated Joby Harold’s Awake for release on November 30 of this year. In the film Hayden Christensen plays a victim of “anesthetic awareness,” in which a patient remains awake but paralyzed during surgery. Jessica Alba also stars alongside Lena Olin, Terrence Howard and Sam Robards. Watch for new pics (older ones here), trailers and more VERY soon. The film has been testing quite a lot here in Los Angeles, looks like maybe they think they have something solid on their hands? Fingers crossed.

MGM Thriller Awake Moves to November

Sunday, March 1st, 2009

File under: We’re not exactly sure if this is horror, but the premise is chilling enough.

MGM slotted the Jessica Alba and Hayden Christensen vehicle Awake for a November 30th release. The ex-Vader plays a man who experiences “anesthetic awareness” during heart surgery. In other words, he’s paralyzed but completely cognizant of what’s happening to him. It’s a concept that has been explored in “Tales from the Crypt” and FX’s “Nip/Tuck.”

Joby Harold makes his writing-directing debut with Awake and until we start seeing trailers that prove this doesn’t remotely look scary, we’ll keep it on our radar.

Mythology of Jumper

Sunday, March 1st, 2009

We just shared with you the trailer for JUMPER this week and now we have a complete break down of the mythology of Jumper and exactly what it is all about. In Jumper A genetic anomaly allows a young man to teleport himself anywhere. He discovers this gift has existed for centuries and finds himself in a war that has been raging for thousands of years between “Jumpers” and those who have sworn to kill them.

JUMPING – The Phenomenon: Throughout time, there have been individuals who possess the power to teleport (or Jump). They have used their abilities for personal gain, to escape from their enemies and to change the course of history.

The ability to Jump is a genetic anomaly that has existed for centuries and those who possess this gift have a freedom that most people can’t begin to comprehend. They can transport themselves anywhere in the world at any time, for any reason.

Experience and emotion play a key role in the affect of a Jump and depending on the Jumpers state of mind at the time, it can cause significant damage. Jumpers Jump for the first time at age 5. As they refine their gift, the Jump becomes more fluid. However, even the most skilled Jumper will cause environmental damage when in danger, angry or in a heightened emotional state during a Jump.

When a Jumper teleports between two places he/she opens up a rift in the fabric of space-time. The visible result of this process is a Jumpscar, an otherworldly “scar” that hangs in the air for several seconds, like smoke from a cigarette.

Jumpscars are dangerous and will shred anything or anyone who tries to touch one. A bullet fired near a Jumpscar will behave unpredictably, which is why Paladins do no use conventional weapons around Jumpers. However, it is possible for one Jumper to follow another Jumper through his Jumpscar. They can transport themselves anywhere in the world at any time, for any reason.

Rules of Jumping

1.
A jumper can only jump to a place that he has been before or a place that he can see
2.
A jumper can take with him objects he is gripping that are not anchored to the earth
3.
A jumper cannot jump if he is tethered to the earth or tethered to something that is anchored to the earth
4.
There are four main factors that affect the nature of a jump:
1.
Skill level – novice to master. Skill level affects mainly the precision of the jump. The more precise the jump, the less unintentional the side effects there will be. A novice jumper is a sloppy jumper causing a great deal of side effects and leaving apparent scars.
2.
Emotional state – calm to freaked out. A jumper’s emotional state will affect the intensity of the jump. The more freaked out a jumper is the more side effects there will be. If a jumper is calm, the side effects will be minimal and will not leave an apparent scar.
3.
Intent – stealthy to destructive. A skillful jumper can control the side effects of a jump. He can also cause harmful side effects if that is his intent and if he has the skill to do so
4.
Difficulty – easy to hard. The harder the jump, the greater the side effects. For example, jumping a car for the first time would be a hard jump.

PALADINS: For almost as long as there have been “Jumpers” there have been those that hunt them. These people are called Paladins — an ancient sect that has long recognized the threat that Jumpers pose to the world, the Paladins have evolved into an elite organization of warrior-like individuals who find and kill Jumpers around the globe.

Paladins believe Jumpers are simply too powerful to be allowed to exist and also believe that Jumping is bad for the planet. Generally, new Paladins are recruited by family members and the awesome responsibility is handed down through generations. Over the years, the Paladins have cultivated a special skill – the ability to sense when a Jumper is about to Jump in the vicinity. This heightened awareness gives the Paladins a much needed tool to use when battling the Jumpers. Today, Paladins are so good at killing Jumpers that few make it to adulthood. When Jumpers start Jumping around age 5, their youth and inexperience makes it easy for Paladins to track them.

PALADIN WEAPONS Over time, the Paladins have also created special weapons that help in the capture and extermination of Jumpers. Primary among these are tether weapons, which are shot out of a special kind of gun. The tethers have the ability to harness Jumpers and an electrical charge running through the tethers prevents the Jumper from jumping while the Paladin moves in the for the kill. Paladins also use special electrified nets to contain jumpers.

Celebrities in Southeast Michigan ?

Sunday, March 1st, 2009

Celebrity sightings in Southeast Michigan are rare, even in our purportedly hip college town. But they do happen – and apparently all during Fall Break.

Hayden Christensen popped into “the liberal mecca of the Midwest” (a nickname from the era of that other Hayden) just as many of you split to enjoy the precious days off.

In town for a film partially set in Ann Arbor, the pretty-boy actor spent some time walking around town Friday, dropping by Bivouac and Ashley’s.

“I walked in just as he was leaving,” reported one Biv employee, “but one of the other girls who works there actually had the privilege of applying concealer to his zit.”

Purchases were scanty (some Chapstick), but regret came in buckets.

“I’m pretty upset I didn’t get to work earlier,” our friend confessed. “I’ll never be late again.”

I spied Hayden walking into Ashley’s and being guided into the basement just as a few friends and I were settling into the first of several hours of happy hour that evening – most of it spent pondering “Life As a House” versus “Shattered Glass,” of course. One of us interrupted Hayden’s convo with a few film students outside:

HS: “So, what kind of cigarettes does Hayden Christensen smoke?”

HC: “du Mauriers.” (He’s Canadian.)

The lucky guy was also treated to a trailer of the upcoming film, “Jumper,” via the iPhone of one of Hayden’s handlers; the film features teleportation, Hayden running on top of the Sphinx and Samuel L. Jackson. Question is, if “Jumper” was filming in Ann Arbor (talk to the 60 Huron High School kids used as extras for a scene in Gallup Park earlier this year), where was everyone else? I want Samuel L. Jackson at Rick’s, damn it.

Audiences Nationwide Will ‘Awake’ to a Frightening Reality on November 30th

Sunday, March 1st, 2009

On November 30th, “Awake” will debut in theaters nationwide exposing the horrifying, true-life surgical event known as “anesthetic awareness.” In “Awake” a patient’s failed anesthesia leaves him fully conscious but physically paralyzed during surgery. The patient’s new wife is forced to struggle with her own demons as a terrifying drama unfolds around the couple. Jessica Alba, Hayden Christensen, Terrence Howard, Lena Olin and Fisher Stevens star in the psychological thriller which is written and directed by Joby Harold. “Awake” is being theatrically distributed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc. (MGM).

According to the American Society of Anesthesiologists and the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists, anesthetic awareness is “when surgical patients can recall their surroundings or an event – sometimes even pain – related to their surgery while they were under general anesthesia.” (1)

According to the Anesthesia & Analgesia journal, anesthetic awareness can include full consciousness during surgery with pain and explicit recall of intraoperative events. (2)

“This film will do to surgery what ‘Jaws’ did to swimming in the ocean,” said Deutsch/Open City Films co-founder and producer Joana Vicente.

Joby Harold stated, “We have created an original and scary experience unlike anything audiences have seen before. The prospect of being conscious during surgery elicits a visceral response in everyone, and I can’t wait for audiences to join us on this unique, fun ride.”

Carol Weihrer, President and Founder of the Anesthesia Awareness Campaign, Inc., stated, “I have been following the progress of ‘Awake’ since the project was announced, and as a victim of anesthesia awareness, I dedicated the last nine years to educating the public to help them understand the scope, sheer terror and trauma involved when awareness occurs. Recently, I attended the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) annual conference and they are finally beginning to publicly acknowledge this problem. The Anesthesia Awareness Campaign and the ASA are also working together on a database registry of victims, estimated to be at least 100 times a day in the United States. And while we are working together, there is no way to accurately describe to someone how it feels to be ‘entombed in a corpse’ as I was.”

“Every year an estimated 20,000 to 40,000 of the 21 million patients who receive general anesthesia wake up during surgery because they are under- anesthetized, usually by mistake or because doctors fear too high a dose of anesthesia could be dangerous. Half of them, can hear or feel what is going on but are unable to communicate what is happening to them because they have been temporarily paralyzed. Nearly 30 percent feel pain, studies have shown. As a result of the experience, about 50 percent of awareness victims develop serious psychological problems, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), experts say.” (3)

“Awake” may not be suitable for those about to undergo anesthesia for surgery.

Joby Harold makes his directorial debut from a script he wrote. The films ensemble cast includes Jessica Alba, Hayden Christensen, Terrence Howard, Lena Olin, Sam Robards, Christopher McDonald, Fisher Stevens, and Arliss Howard.

Bob Weinstein, Harvey Weinstein, Kelly Carmichael and Tim Williams are the film’s executive producers. Joana Vicente and Jason Kliot of Deutsch/Open City Films served as producers along with John Penotti and Fisher Stevens of GreeneStreet Films. Amy Kaufman and Tory Tunnell are co-producers. Russell Carpenter is the director of photography, Craig McKay is the editor, Dina Goldman is the production designer, Cynthia Flynt is the costume designer and Avy Kaufman is the casting director.

I hope you’re sitting down:

NEW YORK, NEW YORK (October 23, 2007) –On November 30th, “Awake” will debut in theaters nationwide exposing the horrifying, true-life surgical event known as “anesthetic awareness.” In “Awake” a patient’s failed anesthesia leaves him fully conscious but physically paralyzed during surgery.

Now, it’s true that quality films have been made from shakier premises. But rarely. And I hope it’s not remiss of me to point out that Jessica Alba wrestling with her demons is unlikely to be much of a draw unless she is doing it in a tub of jello while wearing a bikini. Then there’s this:

“This film will do to surgery what ‘Jaws’ did to swimming in the ocean,” said Deutch/Open City Films co-founder and producer Joana Vicente.

This seems to me rather unlikely: As horrible as anesthetic awareness undoubtedly is, it doesn’t fire the cinematic imagination in quite the same way as the thought of being bitten in half by a monster shark. But the deeper problem with the producer’s enthusiastic comparison is that unlike swimming in the ocean–which tends to be an elective activity–surgery is something people generally undertake for very good reasons. A movie that dissuades folks from getting medical attention isn’t really doing them any favors. But never fear:

Joby Harold stated, “…. The prospect of being conscious during surgery elicits a visceral response in everyone, and I can’t wait for audiences to join us on this unique, fun ride.”

A Word of Warning About Awake

Sunday, March 1st, 2009

“Awake may not be suitable for those about to undergo anesthesia for surgery.”

An ominous admonition from the makers of MGM’s latest thriller starring Hayden Christensen and Jessica Alba. This statement was found in a press release regarding the November 30th release of the film.

In Awake, Christensen becomes the victim of anesthetic awareness – meaning the anesthesia administered to a patient during surgery leaves him/her fully conscious but paralyzed during surgery. Terrence Howard (Iron Man), Lena Olin and Fisher Stevens co-star.

Joby Harold, writer-director of the film, says, “We have created an original and scary experience unlike anything audiences have seen before. The prospect of being conscious during surgery elicits a visceral response in everyone, and I can’t wait for audiences to join us on this unique, fun ride.”

But apparently when you can do such things, bad dudes like Samuel L. Jackson come and track you down. But you get girls like Rachel Bilson. Damn these double-edged swords! JUMPER was once conceived by Fox to be the first part in a trilogy and here’s hoping they go ahead and finish this puppy, cause I’m already sold. Anywho, we’re proud to bring you today an exclusive first look at the poster for the film. Anywhere is possible indeed!… JUMPER hits theaters next February.

Jessica Alba Comments on Awake

Sunday, March 1st, 2009

What is the upcoming movie, Awake, starring Jessica Alba about? Let’s ask the gorgeous actress herself…

It’s about anesthetic awareness which is what happens when you go under for surgery, get put under for anesthesia and they don’t give you enough for your body weight. Basically you’re body is asleep, like it should be, but your mind is awake. So you hear and you can feel the entire surgery.

The whole time you can’t say anything. You can’t talk. You can’t move. You can’t cry. You can’t do anything. You just have to suffer through it until it wears off.It happens to people… So Hayden Christensen’s character goes through this whole thing. My character, we’re engaged for six months. We’ve been together for a year and when he gets a call that he got a heart, it’s available and he can have this heart transplant, he’s like, I’m going to do something for myself.

We’re going to get married because our relationship he’s been keeping a secret from his mother. So then the mother, in the waiting room with me, finds out that we got married and I’m her assistant.

And he’s like a billionaire. So she doesn’t trust my character and thinks it’s weird She’s always been coddling him his whole life and she doesn’t want to let go. Then while he’s in surgery, he has flashbacks to their relationship and how it started and why it means so much. She’s the reason why he lives through this terrifying experience.
