Moonlight Cinema is back for summer

Posted by admin with 1 Comment

There’s nothing quite like that first hint of summer after a long chilly winter, and one sure-fire sign that it’s time to pack away the winter woolies is the highly anticipated return of Ford Fiesta Moonlight Cinema for another season of memorable movie-going under the stars.

Each year, Moonlight Cinema transforms the grassy embankment of the Belvedere Amphitheatre in Centennial Park into the ultimate outdoor cinema experience, showcasing an impressive schedule of classic, cult and new release films.

Valentine’s Day will again be a season highlight, with the premiere of New York, I Love You, the incredible anthology of stories from some of our most celebrated filmmakers. Set in one of the most loved cities in the world, New York, I Love You features an impressive ensemble of stars including Orlando Bloom, Natalie Portman, Ethan Hawke, Andy Garcia, Blake Lively and Hayden Christensen to name just a few.

New York, I Love You Review

Posted by admin with 1 Comment

Love is in the air a second time. How does it smell in the big apple?

New York, I Love You is the second installment of Emmanuel Benbihy’s global explorations of love. I still remember fondly watching Paris, Je T’aime on the big screen, being enthralled by how truly special each short was. Following that lead would be tough for anyone, but Benbihy and his writers have moved the concept to New York City, where viewers can be introduced to an assortment of eccentric people and neighborhoods. The result is not as masterful and refreshing as Paris, Je T’aime , but the vast array of styles and ideas still offers imaginative tales and an overall worthwhile film.

Jiang Wen - This strange short has a young man named Ben meeting a girl in a bar. He has a cell phone she left behind, and starts a conversation that is interrupted by her boyfriend. Wen instills a rather slick methodology here that I dug, and Garcia and Christensen have a solid chemistry as foes.

The 411: New York, I Love You makes some odd changes to the structure and layout of the anthology film that weren’t needed, but the content is still very heartwarming, funny, and profound. Each of the 10 directors offer their own tale of love, and how it can work differently in everyone’s life. There were one or two I did not care for, but overall, this was a terrific film, and will hopefully get more people interested in the various filmmakers. This is not quite a wide release yet, and might not expand, but then again, neither did the first film. See it if you can, or remember it for DVD.
Final Score: 8.0 [ Very Good ]

Hayden Christensen: Ben
Andy Garcia: Garry
Rachel Bilson: Molly
Release Date: October 16, 2021
Running Time: 1 hour and 45 minutes

New York, I Love You Reviews

From Roger Ebert-

The rules: No more than two days’ shooting time. One week of editing. An eight-minute time limit. Ten directors, and one more to consider the 10 short films and create transitions. “New York, I Love You” is the second installment in an ambitious project that began with “Paris, Je T’aime” (2006), an anthology with 13 directors. Rio is said to be next.

I suspect the title isn’t intended as a simple declaration, but should be pronounced in a wondering tone, with a wry shake of the head, as in, “oh, you kid.” The film assembles a collection of colorful characters, who find that eight minutes is quite enough to make an impression, as so many New Yorkers would agree.

Our thoughts: I absolutely love “New York, I Love You,” and I don’t just say that because I love New York as a city. Much like its beautiful predecessor “Paris, je t’aime,” this wonderful cinematic anthology of short films set in the Big Apple proves that especially genius screenwriting and strong acting can create a truly memorable big-screen experience.

“New York, I Love You” boasts a series of simple short films written and directed by different filmmakers from all over the world, and much like the city itself, the movie carries a strong multicultural character I found very easy to appreciate and enjoy. Even though each of these shorts clearly differs in style, they all flow together really well packed into one feature.

Emmanuel Benbihy Loves New York

Posted by admin with 1 Comment

One of the most anticipated movies of the fall, New York, I Love You is made up of several short films revolving around the elusive concept of love. The movie is the second in a planned series called “Cities of Love”—the first being the 2006 international hit, Paris je ta’ime.

Just before the movie’s release on October 16, MM spoke with the series’ hands-on producer, Emmanuel Benbihy.

MM: New York, I Love You, like Paris, je t’aime, gathers together an eclectic group of international moviemakers-from Fatih Akin to Wen Jiang to Mira Nair to Brett Ratner. How does the pre-production process work on an anthology like this? Do writers pitch you story ideas, and then directors come aboard, or do you seek out directors/screenwriters you think would be interesting for the film?

EB: It begins with the story or the idea generated by the director. We begin a project only when it is fully financed. That way we can approach the creative talent with a firm commitment and an extremely attractive opportunity for creative carte blanche. Once they have formulated a concept and they present it to us as a pitch, they have the freedom to bring in the writer, DP, editor and on-camera talent for their segments. The only prerequisites are that they work within the overall subject matter for the film: A love story.
